Flatey is one of the many island on the Breidafjordur bay and probably the largest. The island can be reached by ferry, trip time is 3 hrs. Flatey is rich of history and was quite densely populated in past centuries. A monastery was founded on the island in 1172 which made the it an important centre for culture and education. Now less than 10 people stay there all year but in summer it’s a popular tourist destination. Here are a few pictures from a visit to the island on June 8, 2003
