His & Hers Huffy Sportsman
At an estate sale recently, there was a man's bicycle stuffed into the corner of a stank garage, no price tag on it, so I asked if it, too, was for sale. Sure, the lady said, and told me it had been hanging in the rafters. She said five bucks or best offer. As I contemplated a best offer, a woman behind me exclaimed "Just five dollars?!" and so I knew I'd better speak up. So I offered five dollars and pushed it out into the yard next to the cash table.
I poked around some more, then went into the stank house, made my way to the basement, only to find the woman's version of the same bike, propped up on an old roller stand so that Grandma could get her exercise. I pulled it up the stairs, roller stand still attached, just happened to find the original seat to Grandpa's bike, and brought the two of them home for ten dollars.
Last night I got the first half of one of them all cleaned up, and it looks a lot different! I pulled the headlight off, sanded and steel-wooled it clean, then sprayed it with primer and then flat black. That headlight, and maybe its twin, will go onto my red rat bike.
The his and hers Huffy Sportsman matching set will be resold some day.
