So many great images from the holidays, but I like this one as it represents a quiet afternoon with just Doug and the kids wandering around Riverdale Farm. This is the old, abandoned Monkey House beside the turtle pond.
I was reading an article about a group of friends in San Fran who made a group decision to go one year without buying any new goods. It hit a nerve with me as I am constantly disgusted by the amount we consume, and in turn, waste everday. I am also guilty of this. I do recycle - alot. I try not to buy processed foods and overpacked goods. I made a real effort to ride my bike more this summer, but I still rely on my car way too much. Having said this, I officially started my "year without shopping" over a week ago. We are not including renovation materials as we are needing to move forward with the work on our house. We can purchase used goods and essentials (foods, toilet paper, etc). Also, I don't think artwork should be included in this, but Doug may fight me on this. He has also agreed to do this, but has made me promise not to get any parking tickets this year - which may turn out to be harder than no shopping. I shall keep you all posted.
